Burbank, a native of Massachusetts, was a nationally known figure who was responsible for creating many new varieties of plants. He is credited with introducing more than 250 new varieties of fruit, including a large number of plum varieties that are widely used in agriculture. A portion of the property was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Originally a place to store carriages and horse tack, the carriage house was renovated in 1986 as a museum. The building accommodates exhibits relating to Burbank's life and work, the gift shop, and the tour registration desk. An original cupola atop the building was replicated in 1989.

The home and gardens are located in downtown Santa Rosa, on the corner of Santa Rosa Avenue and Sonoma Avenue. I didn't know much about Luther Burbank before visiting the home.
